Cascading Privacy

Conceptualizing Privacy Personalization

  • Adaptivity ↔ adaptability spectrum (Oppermann et al., 1997):
    • Provide adaptivity by default, flip to adaptability if desired
  • Personalization classification scheme (Fan & Poole, 2006):
    • What is personalized? ➙ privacy settings
    • To whom to personalize? ➙ individual ORCID record owners
    • Who does the personalization? ➙ implicit personalization (by Encyclia) by default, explicit personalization (targeted adjustments) if desired
  • Cascading privacy, as shown here, appears to not be well-represented in the existing literature about personalization.
